{"id":2749,"date":"2024-08-12T12:37:58","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T10:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asturtransfer.com\/covadonga\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T01:23:06","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T23:23:06","slug":"covadonga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asturtransfer.com\/en\/covadonga\/","title":{"rendered":"Covadonga"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you're on vacation in <strong>Asturias<\/strong>\u2014especially if it's your first time here\u2014one of the places you won't want to miss is <strong>Covadonga<\/strong>, with its majestic sanctuary and stunning lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being in Asturias and not visiting Covadonga is like being in Granada and not visiting the Alhambra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Covadonga <\/strong>is one of the symbols of Asturias and of the Asturians, who must visit it at least once in their lives, although for many, the annual pilgrimage to pay homage to the Virgin of Covadonga\u2014better known as <strong>La Santina<\/strong>\u2014is a ritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical and sentimental value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Covadonga <\/strong>also holds great historical and sentimental value, as it was here that the <strong>Battle of Covadonga<\/strong> took place, in which <strong>King Pelayo<\/strong> and his valiant Asturians, with the help of La Santina, managed to drive back the Islamic troops\u2014a series of events that are part of history and form the foundation of modern Spain. Due to its historical, religious, natural, and tourist significance, Covadonga represents the <strong>heart of Asturias<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sanctuary of the Royal Site of Covadonga<\/strong>, which captivates visitors with its beauty, monuments, and spectacular setting among the mountains, is one of the most visited historical complexes in Spain. The Sanctuary of Covadonga consists of several monuments, sculptures, and points of interest, including the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Santa Cueva<\/strong> is where the statue of <strong>La Santina (Virgin of Covadonga)<\/strong> is located. It can be reached via a staircase with 105 steps known as the \u201c<strong>del perd\u00f3n\u201d or \u201clas promesas\u201d staircase<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the cave, we also find the <strong>tomb of Don Pelayo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Los Siete Ca\u00f1os Spring<\/strong> is located in the lower part of the cave, next to the lagoon. It is shaped like a cup from which seven streams of water flow, emanating from the <strong>Cruz de La Victoria<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>La Colegiata de San Fernando, <\/strong>es el edificio m\u00e1s antiguo del Santuario. En su interior destaca un retablo barroco que procede del Monasterio de Sta. Mar\u00eda de Valdedi\u00f3s.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Basilica of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong> is perhaps one of the most recognizable images on Asturian postcards\u2014an imposing Neo-Romanesque building constructed entirely of pink limestone quarried from the mountains of Covadonga. This beautiful structure, which seems to crown the entire complex and the site where it stands, was inaugurated in 1901. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Monument to King Pelayo<\/strong> is located in the Plaza de la <strong>Bas\u00edlica<\/strong>, on a <strong>stone pedestal and dominated by the Cross of Victory<\/strong>. The statue of Pelayo stands with his back to Mount Auseva and facing the <strong>Cave of La Santina<\/strong>, \u201cpointing\u201d toward the Virgin who protected him in the \u201cBattle of Covadonga.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Covadonga Museum<\/strong> houses priceless artifacts. There, visitors can learn about the origins, development, and <strong>history of the Sanctuary<\/strong>. It features important works of art and the jewels of the Virgin of Covadonga.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u201cLos Leones\u201d are two marble sculptures that stand on either side of the road and guard the entrance to the Sanctuary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>El Parque del Pr\u00edncipe<\/strong> is a beautiful place where you can enjoy a pleasant stroll amid lush vegetation, charming wooden bridges, and architectural features of great historical and artistic value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Fuente del Le\u00f3n<\/strong>, a monumental stone fountain located on the upper esplanade of the Sanctuary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Covandonga, a true natural treasure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Covandonga <\/strong>is also a true natural treasure, as it is situated in a privileged natural setting characterized by its extraordinary beauty and purity.
